Salud! Can a Glass of Red Wine with Dinner Improve Your Health?

According to some studies, it can. Consuming red wine in moderation may work to reduce the risk of heart disease. How? The alcohol and certain antioxidants, including flavonoids and resveratrol, in red wine may help prevent heart disease by:

  • Raising HDL (“good”) cholesterol
  • Helping to reduce the formation of blood clots
  • Helping to protect cells in the walls of the artery, which prevents artery damage caused by high levels of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. Red wine may also decrease LDL production.
Benefits of Red Wines

A report published by Yale-New Haven Hospital suggests that some red wines may be better than others for your health because they contain higher amounts of flavonoids, and thereby have more powerful LDL-lowering properties. The wines with the highest flavonoid content include Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Syrah and Pinot Noir, while Merlot and Zinfandel contain the lowest amounts of flavonoids.

Drink in Moderation

The key to reaping the health benefits of wine is drinking in moderation. Drinking no more than one glass (5 ounces) of wine per day for women, and no more than two glasses (10 ounces) of wine per day for men, may reduce the risk of heart disease and increase longevity. Drinking more than the amounts listed above may actually increase the risk of health problems – including certain types of cancer. If you are not able to control your alcohol intake due to a personal or family history of alcohol abuse, or if you have already developed heart or liver disease, you should refrain from drinking alcohol altogether.
