On Exhibit
Born and raised in Germany, Bernd moved to Arizona in 2001 where he
finally found a place that feels like home. Being a physicist in his
professional life - photography as a hobby began about 25 years ago in
his early twenties. In his late forties the long neglected artist
inside demanded more attention and the immersion into photography
became more serious, which led to a portfolio that covers a wide
choice of photographic art, ranging from traditional to experimental
fine art.
Bernd has a particular interest in abstract structures. Be it the
shapes of cracks in dry soil, the sometimes bizarre forms of rocks and
dead trees (Arizona is a great place to find these...) or the ragged
rind of old trees. He likes to see and unravel things in these
structures. Almost always you can find faces, especially after
manipulations and merging image and mirror image.
His intentions are not at all in trying to document. He does not
believe in leaving the photos unedited or unaltered - as if taking a
photo would be a mere act of metrology. The human eye and the brain
don't work that way. Bernd tries to express how he sees things.
Enhancing things that spoke to him while he was there or suppressing
things that he didn't even notice when he was there is part of the
creative process. Sometimes small alterations like saturation of
contrast are sufficient to achieve the expected result, sometimes only
digital alteration and abstraction of the original photo resonate with
subconscious memories which the unaltered photo would not be able to.
