How to Avoid The Freshman 15 With Healthy Food On A Budget

As a freshman in college, living on your own for the first time is where eating patterns for the rest of your life begin. It can be a slippery slope! Between ‘first-year stress’, calorie- brimming campus cafeterias, late-night partying and pizza runs, and finding the time between studies to actually sit down for a meal (let alone exercise), it’s easy to see why college freshman tend to gain a few pounds… more like 10-15. Finding ways of eating healthy in college can sometimes be more difficult than passing Organic Chemistry but, making healthier choices can put you ahead of the class when it comes to eating healthy in college and well after graduation.

It’s a given that college is an adjustment, especially for freshmen, but that doesn’t mean there also has to be an adjustment to your belt size.

6 tips for eating healthy in college:

1.    Exercise!

2.    Drink water instead of high, empty-calorie sugared drinks and alcohol.

3.    Beware of the dining hall, snack machines, and practice portion control! Choose options that are baked, broiled, steamed, or grilled and stay away from anything that’s drenched in cream or cheese.

4.    Make friends with the salad bar but skimp on the cheese, bacon bits, croutons, and other add-ons. Stick with a light oil & vinegar dressing instead of the creamy kinds.

5.    Snack smartly and keep only healthy snacks in your dorm room, like apples with peanut butter, baby carrots and hummus, Greek yogurt and fruit.

6.    When you’re off-campus with friends, find restaurants with healthy options, versus food that’s fast, fried, and non-nutritious.
