Make Healthy Eating a Habit for the New Year

Every December, and into early January, people all over the world make long lists of resolutions and changes they are going to make in the New Year. These changes rarely stick, and by February 1st hordes of people have gone back to watching TV for hours, given up on their diets, and all but forgotten about their gym memberships.

The good news is: old habits really do die hard. This is just as true for good habits as it is for bad habits. Make healthy eating a way of life – a habit – and you’re much less likely to give up and revert back to unhealthy food choices. Arizona restaurant Pita Jungle offers many vegetarian options and has a number of great tips for making healthy eating a habit in 2013!

4 Tips for Healthy Eating Habits

1. Don’t Skip Breakfast

You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it again: breakfast is the most important meal of the day. In fact, people who skip breakfast tend to be fatter than people who don’t. Make yourself eat something in the morning to jump start your metabolism and prevent blood sugar crashes that lead to low energy levels and cause you to overcompensate at your next meal.

2. Plan and Prepare

We don’t think about habits once they’re formed – they’re automatic. Plan your meals a week or two in advance and then simply execute. Make a list of what you’ll need and buy only those foods. Get any prep work done in the morning or the night before, so all you have to worry about at mealtime is putting it all together.

3. Simplicity and Convenience

We all lead busy lives. Many poor eating habits develop because we reach for whatever is convenient, and often foods that are fast are also unhealthy. But it is easier than you might think to keep your fridge and cupboards stocked with healthy, convenient foods.

Keep plenty of raw vegetables to grab as a quick snack on the go. When you make dinner, make enough to ensure leftovers for lunch for the next day or two. Having the right foods around to reach for is a key factor in developing a healthy-eating habit.

4. Take it with You

We often go too long between meals and end up overeating because of it. Snacking on fruits, vegetables or nuts between meals will keep you satiated and keep your blood sugar steady, preventing mealtime pig-outs.
