Why People All Over the World Love Mediterranean Food

For decades, the Mediterranean diet has been regarded as one of the healthiest in the world. Across the entire Mediterranean region diets vary greatly, but what most people think of as the Mediterranean diet comes mainly from Greece and Italy. The diets that developed in this region over centuries were a reflection of what kind of food was readily available: many people grew at least some of their own food, and fish and lamb was eaten more than beef or dairy because fish were plentiful and lamb and goats were more easily raised than cows in the Greek and Italian climates.

Health Benefits of Mediterranean Food

Fresh whole foods

The popularity of Mediterranean food is due largely to its health benefits. It just so happens that what makes Mediterranean food so healthy is also what makes it so enjoyable. The diet places an emphasis on lots of fresh whole foods such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and legumes.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is a staple of the Mediterranean diet and health benefits are derived from its healthy fat content. Mediterranean food is minimally processed, helping to maintain optimum nutritional value. Moderate amounts of fish and poultry are consumed, and a minimal amount of red meat.

Moderate alcohol intake

Scientific evidence also suggests that moderate intake of alcohol, especially red wine – another Mediterranean staple – can have health benefits as well. Just make sure to keep it limited to a glass or two a day!
